My Summer Staples

Hi there, my name’s Kaitlyn and I work here at Grey Rock alongside Beth. It’s been a great experience so far and have the things I’ve learnt have started to change the way I dress. One of the things I’ve learnt since I started working here in January is how to dress for my shape. I’ve also really started to embrace the idea of staple wardrobe pieces and making them work hard for me.

So I wanted to share with you my top four summer staples. I’ve found they’re the first things I grab and am always styling them in different ways.

 1. Four Way Skirt

Here I’ve paired my staple piece, a 4-way reversible organic cotton pencil skirt, with a looser tank. I simply tucked the front of it into the skirt. I added some silver accessories to bring the whole outfit together.

2. White Organic Cotton Tank

For this outfit I turned the reversible skirt to the other side, which is navy, and added my second summer staple, a white organic cotton tank. Keeping the silver accessories on, this outfit is a simple way to look great and to keep cool.

3. Organic Cottn Dress

This has to be one of my all time favourites for summer. This dress is the perfect “throw on and go” outfit. It can easily be dressed up with some great jewellery and a great pair of shoes, or dressed down with some flats or sandals. In my opinion you can never go wrong with a cotton dress in the summer.

4. Maxi Dress

And last, but not least, is this amazing maxi dress. It’s made from a tencel blend and just feels absolutely wonderful. Since it’s loose and airy it makes for the perfect summer outfit to beat the heat.

My Summer Staples Checklist

I’ve noticed that not only do I have go-to pieces, but I have  go-to fabric. I love organic cotton, it breathes so well and makes those hot days more comfortable.  I also tend to choose neutral colours, and add a pop of colour with accessories.  But every now and then, I feel brave enough to wear a bright piece, like the maxi. And finally fit is key, not size. I’ve stopped looking at the numbers and have started to focus on how the piece works with my body. In the summer I usually prefer a looser fit, but even then, you don’t want to look like you’re wearing a sack.

Anyways, those are my staples, and how I like to style them. Hopefully you’ve picked up a tip or two to help you get the most out of your summer wardrobe.

You can find all my picks in our downtown Guelph store. Some of them are also in our online store (links below)
