Update: Since this post, we have posted further information on the opportunity to own Grey Rock and subsequent necessary information. Click the link to find out more.
Five years have flown by since I embarked on the journey that led to the creation of Grey Rock Clothing Co. as a way to make a difference in the world.
From the very beginning I was astonished and humbled by the enthusiasm and support I received from the Guelph community, even before I opened the doors at 29 Quebec Street. We have formed real, lasting relationships with our ever-growing clientele, as well as our neighbouring shopkeepers and business owners (who have been so generous since day one in their collaboration and camaraderie).
Grey Rock has proven that customers do indeed want unique, well made, good quality clothing, offered at a reasonable price. We have gone far beyond selling a few organic cotton or bamboo garments: our customers can count on us to research the whole supply chain behind each item, enabling them to use their wallets to create change. I wholeheartedly believe that we have been successful in our goal of showing that fashion and a sustainable lifestyle can go hand-in-hand.
And we’ve walked our talk in other ways including proudly earning B Corp certification to solidify our commitment to a triple bottom line: people, planet and profit. Grey Rock has been honoured with a number of local business awards and has prospered during a time when big chains like H&M are struggling.
The past year has been the the best yet for Grey Rock and the future is bright as Quebec Street continues to evolve as a shopping destination in downtown Guelph.
Progress is impossible without change and 2017 is no exception. I have been reflecting over the last year on my own life and where I see myself moving into the future. Many of you already know that there is another passion that runs deep within me: travel.
My husband Joel and I have always been nomads. We both have an intrinsic desire to see new places, meet people from far walks of life, and to challenge ourselves to step outside our comfort zone. It is how we met and fell in love - overseas and on the traveler’s road. And now, our restless feet are calling.
We have decided it is time for us to embark on a new chapter in our life together, and it is with bittersweet excitement that I tell you it is time for Grey Rock Clothing Co. to find a new owner. I have decided to sell the business so that Joel and I can continue our travels in January 2018, where we hope to explore Eastern Europe, and then head towards Nepal and India.
This was not an easy decision and it comes with a strong desire to leave Grey Rock in the hands of someone who shares our values and our desire to build a better future. If you are that person or if you know of someone who may be interested in leading Grey Rock further along its path, I welcome you to contact me to discuss the opportunity or share the news with your network. I am hopeful that within our community, the perfect person is waiting to continue the work that we have done.
None of this would have been possible without my amazing customers, to whom I am eternally grateful, but also my amazing staff, both past and present, who help me carry out Grey Rock’s mission on a daily basis and have proven themselves to be so much more than employees, but friends.
This is not the end, but rather an exciting new beginning in both my own life as well as the Grey Rock community. I look forward to many conversations with all of you, and to new adventures on the horizon.
